There is a great power within the magic of protection, for it is a cornerstone of any magical or spiritual practice. However, its true power extends and operates in ways we may not expect.
One of the most common mistakes in magical and spiritual practice is failing to consistently place protection. This isn't just a precaution for major rituals; it's a non-negotiable step for daily living. In a world brimming with energies, both seen and unseen, your divine light can attract all types of harmful forces. These can be as common as negative intentions sent by others (gossip, jealousy, wishes of failure) or unseen attachments such as entities, parasites, and tricksters that seek to drain your lifeforce. Protection is an active force, and its sole purpose is to ensure the wellbeing of what you wish to protect, whether its yourself, a loved one, a sacred space, or even a spell you are brewing. A witch's defense can guard against both physical and metaphysical harm simultaneously.
For instance, let's say you have placed a protection sigil on your vehicle. It can ward against potential accidents, thieves, and vandals, but its work doesn't stop there. As you drive home from work, that same sigil can banish the lingering negative energy you picked up from a difficult coworker, preventing it from latching onto your energetic field. This is the surprising power of protection. It extends past the obvious, defending you from unseen harms you might not even be aware of.
This is why layering your protection is essential. Just as you wouldn't venture into the cold of Antarctica with a single jacket, you shouldn't rely on a single shield for your magical practice. By placing multiple forms of defense, you create a formidable barrier that is difficult to penetrate. For example, to protect your home, you could use a combination of salt around the perimeter, sigils on all four corners, wards at entry points, and a monthly protection spell through candle work. Each layer works collectively, making it nearly impossible for negative energy or entities to enter and cause chaos.
Now, let's explore some of the different types of protection and how they operate. Keep in mind, no matter how you choose to protect yourself, it is your choice on how to execute your spellwork. All forms of protection can be cast in a multitude of ways. Whether it be with sigils, wards, oils, candle spells, or even sachets. Perhaps there is a technique that you prefer over the basics that I have mentioned, follow your intuition and be creative. Always remember to regularly renew your protection, for this keeps it potent and active.
Shielding
Shielding is a form of defense that acts like a magical force field, creating an impenetrable barrier to block and deflect harmful energies. This can be practiced through sigils and wards, a ring of salt around your space, or with a focused candle spell.
Another creative way to use shielding is with cloaking. A neat technique that tricks harmful energies, cloaking can make an object, a spell, a space, or even yourself invisible to a trickster spirit or malicious energy. It’s like casting Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak over yourself. Unseen, unheard, and untouchable.
Banishment
Banishment is a powerful way to remove a person, spirit, or energy that is already affecting you. This technique expels and forces unwanted energy to leave. While it is a potent form of magic, its sole purpose is to restore your peace and harmony, not to cause harm. Many practitioners use this in the form of banishment oil and spellwork to clear themselves and their space.
Binding
This is a technique that can be used to neutralize an energy's ability to cause harm. Binding is used to tether or contain the power of an energy or person. For example, if a person stands before you with harmful intent, you can cast a binding spell to wrap chains around their negative power, effectively neutralizing their ability to act against you.
Binding can also be used in a way to protect yourself. You can visualize it as ribbons made of steel wrapping around you like armor, neutralizing any negative energy you encounter. Binding is an incredibly versatile form of magic that should be practiced with clear intention and a focused mind.
